Good Boss, Bad Boss by Robert Sutton - Book review

Good Boss, Bad Boss

How to Be the Best ... And Learn from the Worst

"Bosses matter. Bosses matter because most employees have bosses, are bosses, or play both roles", writes Professor of Management Science at Stanford University, Robert Sutton in his well researched and landmark book Good Boss, Bad Boss: How to Be the Best ... And Learn from the Worst. The author describes in detail, what makes a good boss or a bad boss, and how to become a great boss while avoiding the bad ones.

Robert Sutton begins with the premise that bosses want to be good ones, to achieve success, and to motivate their employees to accomplish their goals successfully. For the author, bosses really matter to their employees' success and their health, but they also are critical to the overall success of the organization. Robert Sutton demonstrates that the mindset of the best bosses is to achieve positive action for themselves, their employees, and their organization. The author lists the five common traits of great bosses:

* Walking the fine line of being constructive
* Continue to work toward achieving goals even against adversity
* Seek small continual wins and the reaching of mile stone goals
* Do not undermine their employees performance and dignity
* Protect and fight for the best interests of their staff

Robert I. Sutton (photo left) recognizes that a boss must be in charge, and indeed believe that to actually be the case. At the same time, however, a boss is not all powerful and often have a limited impact on decisions. Despite these limitations, employees will credit or blame the boss for either positive or negative outcomes. Since this is the reality of a boss's life, the author suggests using this ambivalence to best advantage. Robert Sutton recommends that bosses act as if they are in control of the situation, even if such is not the case. By utilizing this technique over time, it ceases to be a deception, and becomes a way of acting. Belief, writes the author, follows behavior. To achieve this change in mindset and becoming a good boss, the author suggests:

* Fueling the reality and illusion of control
* Be decisive - Say Yes or No
* Give and get credit
* Accept blame for failures

For me, the power of the book is how Robert Sutton provides proven advice for becoming a good boss based on extensive research. While much of what the author suggests may be construed as common sense, the concepts go much more deeply into how bosses think and behave. The book spells out what good bosses need to do each day to accomplish their goals, and to help their employees achieve success. packed with real world tested techniques.

The author provides a blueprint for not only becoming a great boss, but also how to avoid the pitfalls that can turn a good person into a bad boss. packed with case studies, and a complete review of the literature, Robert Sutton shines a spotlight on the best boss behavior, and how to internalize those best practices as part of the boss's way of thinking and acting. A key point presented in the book is how to transform even a smart boss into a wise boss, creating an even better boss. The author correctly recognizes that becoming a great boss is an ongoing process that is one of continuous learning and improvement, and of enhancing the best behaviors and adding new skills as well.

I highly recommend the insightful and must read book Good Boss, Bad Boss: How to Be the Best ... And Learn from the Worst by Robert Sutton, to anyone seeking a results oriented and readily applicable guide to becoming a great boss in any organization. This book will turn any ordinary boss to a good one, and transform a good boos into a great one, while avoiding the behaviors that mark one as a bad boss.

Read the destined to become classic book Good Boss, Bad Boss: How to Be the Best ... And Learn from the Worst by Robert Sutton, and become the boss you always wanted to work for and to become yourself. Your own productivity will increase, your staff will be more engaged and accomplish more, and your organization will benefit with higher profits as well.

Beyond the Wall of Resistance 2nd Ed by Rick Maurer - Book review

Beyond the Wall of Resistance, Revised 2nd Edition

Why 70% of All Changes Still Fail--and What You Can Do About It

By: Rick Maurer

Published: June 16, 2010
Format: Paperback, 208 pages
ISBN-10: 1885167725
ISBN-13: 978-1885167729
Publisher: Bard Press

"You'd think we'd be pretty good at making change work by now, but we're not", writes renowned change management expert and speaker Rick Maurer, in his practical and change facilitating book Beyond the Wall of Resistance, Revised 2nd Edition: Why 70% of All Changes Still Fail--and What You Can Do About It. The author describes why even well designed plans for organizational change fail, and why this lack of effective change management is costing businesses money, time, and opportunities for innovation.

Rick Maurer presents the sobering reality that since the first edition of his landmark book, that discovered that 70 percent of all change efforts fail, that the statistics have not changed at all. During that time, attempts at organizational change have not been effective, and many of the affected companies have continued to lose competitiveness, or have gone out of business entirely. Change leaders continue to make what the author calls the four biggest mistakes:

* Assuming that understanding equals support and commitment

* Underestimating the potential power of employee and management engagement

* Failure to appreciate the power of fear

* Failure to acknowledge that even a slight lack of trust and confidence in leaders can kill an otherwise fine idea

Rick Maurer (photo left) recognizes that the common causes of change management failure are challenges for leaders, but he has good news for change oriented leaders. There are proven techniques for implementing change effectively, and for overcoming the all too frequently encountered resistance. The author begins by advising leaders to look at change in a new and different way than in the past. Changing the approach taken to change requires an open mind, and a commitment to understanding how change really works. Rick Maurer shares new ideas for planning and implementing change. Through better planning, and consideration of the point of view of those affected, a more effective change management concept can be devised for application. The author also describes proven techniques for creating change effectively through improved leadership skills, for engaging everyone involved, and for meeting and overcoming resistance.

For me, the power of the book is how Rick Maurer addresses the challenges facing change management leaders, and provides a fresh approach to implementing that change effectively with the needs and concerns of all stakeholders in mind. The author demonstrates that top down imposition of change will not work as employees are not engaged in the process or even the reasons why change may even be critical to organizational survival. Building trust is essential to facilitating optimal change, and that requires listening to and engaging the employees. Rick Maurer recognizes that there is very often a gap between what a leader knows, and what can be done, and shares ideas for bridging that knowledge gap successfully. Not only does the book focus on the necessity for a new type of change leadership, but also on the importance of developing a plan with input from all interested parties. At the same time, the book provides a series of actions that can be taken to coordinate change and implement it effectively with the support of employees.

I highly recommend this revised edition of the landmark book Beyond the Wall of Resistance, Revised 2nd Edition: Why 70% of All Changes Still Fail--and What You Can Do About It by Rick Maurer, to anyone seeking to implement change in their own organization effectively and with positive results for management and employees. In this uncertain economy, the need for change is often critical to company survival. By making embracing resistance and gaining support for change through engagement and trust, a leader can guide the organization through a difficult transition more easily.

Read the transformational book Beyond the Wall of Resistance, Revised 2nd Edition: Why 70% of All Changes Still Fail--and What You Can Do About It by Rick Maurer, and discover how to facilitate change in your organization with less chance for becoming one of the 70 percent of organizations that failed in their efforts to change. This book will give you and your company the tools to create change, and gain a lead over the competition, who may be struggling ineffectively with change resistance themselves.

Confucius Jade by Frederick Fisher - Book review

Confucius Jade

By: Frederick Fisher

Published: March 30, 2010
Format: Perfect Paperback, 350 pages
ISBN-10: 0981929133
ISBN-13: 978-0981929132
Publisher: Dudley Court Press

Kong Wan Yi, descendant of the great Chinese philosopher Confucius, narrates the remarkable story of a beautiful jade carving of Shou-Xing Lao, Chinese God of Longevity. The story tells of the near miraculous origin of the jade, its amazing carving, its mystical powers, and its effect on the entire Kong family. The work of art becomes part of a high stakes bidding war between three billionaires who covet the carving's perceived properties to generate long life and atonement. This fantastic tales is woven in the enjoyable and engaging novel Confucius Jade by retired gemologist and frequent traveler to China, Frederick Fisher.

Frederick Fisher creates a world where magic exists in very tangible and affects people in both mystical and real ways. The book is a marvelous fable of loss and redemption, of the seeking and meaning of immortality, the importance of family, and of the spiritual healing power of forces greater than even the wealthiest person. The story is one of many journeys. There is the overarching journey of the jade itself, from its origins to its eventual discovery, its carving into a priceless work of art, and its eventual final resting place. The novel also chronicles the Kong family, of which Confucius was the most memorable member. The Kong family travels from place to place throughout the book, but is always at home in their hearts and minds, if not their physical bodies. The tale also covers the fateful voyages of the three wealthy would be owners of the jade, as their lives are intricately entwined with that of the jade itself.

Frederick Fisher (photo left) presents many themes under the guise of a fable. The jade possesses miraculous powers, or so it seems. The author tantalizes the reader with the possibility that the gods of China play an active role in the lives of its people, and of anyone who comes into contact with that vast and ancient land. The jade represents the possibility of long life, important to many people, and perhaps even critical for those who possess great material riches. The jade carving also presents the deeper power of redemption and atonement. For the three billionaires who have lived troubled by the mistreatment of others, of seeking wealth and power for their own sakes, and casting aside the true riches of of love and family, the jade presents a redeeming quality and a second chance. For the Kong family, the jade is a connection to the past of the family, all the way back to Confucius, and a gateway into a future where the teachings of the ancient sage can become a basis for peace and happiness for all humanity.

Frederick Fisher writes fluidly, and shares his passion for the world of fine gems, art, and his love for the people of China. He may not have set out to create an allegory of the healing power of love, family, and of helping others even in very small ways, but ended up rediscovering the magic that dwells in everyone and everything. The jade may or may not possess mystical properties, but the ability of people's souls to project their hopes, fears, and desire for redemption onto the little statues, forms a magic all of its own. The jade was simply the key that unlocked the love of family and all people that lives inside of everyone, including three billionaires who had spent their lives in avarice. For the Kong family, the jade projected their dreams of reestablishing the teachings of Confucius as a guide to living for everyone in the world.

I highly recommend the exciting and delightful novel Confucius Jade by retired gemologist and frequent traveler to China, Frederick Fisher. The characters are well drawn, memorable, and real for the reader. Even the jade itself, and the spirit of Confucius and his teachings, are important characters in the story.

Read the enthralling and page turning novel Confucius Jade by retired gemologist and frequent traveler to China, Frederick Fisher, and travel with the characters from China, to America, to their eventual peace with themselves and their families. It is a rewarding and wonderful voyage.

Just Watch Me by John English - Book review

Just Watch Me

The Life of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Volume Two: 1968-2000

By: John English

Published: September 7, 2010
Format: Trade Paperback, 832 pages
ISBN: 978-0-676-97524-6
Publisher: Vintage Canada

"Trudeau's rise to national political power was fundamentally a response, first by the Liberal Party and then by many Canadians, to Quebec's new challenge to Canadian confederation" writes award winning author and professor of History at Waterloo University John English in his brilliant and engaging portrait Just Watch Me: The Life of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Volume Two: 1968-2000. The author describes in superb fashion, the career of Pierre Trudeau from his first election as Prime Minister of Canada in 1968, through his achievements and setbacks as leader of the Liberal Party, and ending with his death in 2000.

John English presents a vivid portrait of one of Canada's greatest and most controversial Prime Ministers and political figures. From the moment that a dynamic young Pierre Trudeau burst onto the national scene, winning the Liberal Party leadership in 1968, expectations were lofty for the Quebec born Member of Parliament. Even as the initial excitement of Trudeaumania, and his election as Prime Minister, was still in full bloom, there were already doubters as the abilities and goals of Trudeau. From the very beginning of his tenure in 24 Sussex Drive, regional issues from the West and most notably from Quebec, became powerful issues for his government. When the radical separatist FLQ kidnapped British trade commissioner James Cross, and murdered Quebec cabinet minister Pierre Laporte, it became clear that Quebec issues would define Pierre Trudeau's legacy, and he would parallel those of that province.

John English (photo left) creates a snapshot of the career of Pierre Trudeau, when the Prime Minister and Parliament declared the martial law War Measures Act in October 1971. Trudeau was asked how far he would go to resolve the crisis. The Prime Minister responded with his signature candor, "Just Watch Me". All Canadians did exactly that, for Trudeau's entire time as Prime Minister of Canada. Daring to face down the threat of Rene Levesque's Parti Quebecois, and their referendum of "sovereignty association", Trudeau rallied and led the forces for a Canada that included Quebec. When Peter Lougheed, Premier of oil rich Alberta, asserted Western Canadian petro-strength and the desire for more provincial powers, Trudeau responded with the same vision, "Who speaks for Canada?". Negotiating new federalist agreements with the provinces, that gave voice to all regions, took its toll. Combined with a weak economy, Pierre Trudeau was defeated in the 1979 election by Joe Clark and the Progressive Conservatives. It wasn't the end, however.

After a short time as Leader of the Opposition, and some soul searching as to his future, Pierre Trudeau was re-elected Prime Minister. It would prove to be eventful. During the early 1980s, Pierre Trudeau created agreement among the ten Premiers on the basis of a new Constitution for Canada, repatriated from Great Britain. While not the one he envisioned, it did carry a Charter of Rights and Freedoms for all Canadians. Later, Trudeau would lead the forces opposing the Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accords that he believed undermined Canadian federalism. He also spent considerable time contributing to a more peaceful and equitable international community.

The book is not only about politics. John English shares the story of the Pierre Trudeau's marriage to Margaret Sinclair, and of their three sons. The often stormy Trudeau marriage forms a metaphor for the relationship Trudeau shared with the entire country. Trudeau shared many intimate relationships with women, and their stories are told with candor throughout the book as well. The author presents a fascinating portrait of Pierre Trudeau as visionary idealist, controversial Prime Minister, and as husband and father. Trudeau achieved greatness, and experienced tragedy, in both his personal and public lives. These stories are told with honesty and with compassion, for a man both of his times, and often very much ahead of them as well.

I highly recommend the landmark biography Just Watch Me: The Life of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Volume Two: 1968-2000 by John English, to anyone who seeks a realistic and balanced picture of Pierre Trudeau, both as a man and as a great Prime Minister. Whether a person agrees with Pierre Trudeau's policies or actions, this book is the definitive account of his actions, and his often complex motivations.

Read the tremendous book Just Watch Me: The Life of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Volume Two: 1968-2000 by John English, and discover the importance and vision of Pierre Elliott Trudeau. It is very likely Canada will never forget him or his legacy, and his monumental achievements and accomplishments on behalf of all Canadians.

Secrets of the Moneylab by Kay-Yut Chen & Marina Krakovsky - Book review

Secrets of the Moneylab

How Behavioral Economics Can Improve Your Business

By: Kay-Yut Chen, Marina Krakovsky

Published: September 2, 2010
Format: Hardcover, 256 pages
ISBN: 9781591843542
Publisher: Penguin/Portfolio

"The premise of using economic experiments in a company is simple: to make good decisions about major economic processes, test them out in the safety of a lab", write experimental scientist Kay-Yut Chen and journalist Marina Krakovsky, in their groundbreaking and research based book Secrets of the Moneylab: How Behavioral Economics Can Improve Your Business. The authors describe how to utilize the latest experimental research, in the emerging field of behavioral economics, to achieve greater success in any company.

Kay-Yut Chen (photo left) and Marina Krakovsky use examples from real world businesses that utilized the experimental approach to decision making successfully. Combining their leading edge lab research into actual human behavior, combined with the results of tests of game theory, the authors demonstrate that conventional approaches to incentives, trust, irrational behavior, and ethics may be misguided at best. Real human beings don't always act as they are expected to behave. The way that people will react to risk, uncertainty, and social preferences, when money enters the picture may be very different from what is generally thought to be the case. Because people act as individuals, incentives can be developed through experiments to nudge them in the desired direction.

Marina Krakovsky (photo left) and Kay-Yut Chen recognize that people may react in a manner that may be irrational, but prove that this seemingly illogical action may be predictable. Through experiments into the perceived wisdom of crowds, the authors describe how people can act as a herd in some cases, and wisely in others. Through the development of internal markets, this group behavior can be captured to the benefit of both the employees and the organization. Through the application of controlled lab experiments, and the management of game theory results, the authors provide a strong case for questioning conventional wisdom, thinking in terms of variance as opposed to averages, and how to create powerful gains from small but strategic changes.

For me, the power of the book is how Kay-Yut Chen and Marina Krakovsky base the entire book on actual experiments and real world outcomes. The book is built on lab and game theory experiments, and not on conventional wisdom or possibly very misleading anecdotes. The authors' commitment to an experimental, research oriented approach to business problems uncovered results that help companies develop incentive programs for employees, suppliers, and customers that work as intended. All too often, as the authors indicate, people will attempt to game the system, turning seemingly effective incentive plans into financial and business disasters. The experimental method of behavioral economics tests the concepts before they are tried in the real world, saving time, personnel, and money. The authors share research backed results, into how even small changes to programs can yield much stronger profits, because of people's differing tolerance for risk, uncertainty, trust, and ethics.

I highly recommend the revolutionary book Secrets of the Moneylab: How Behavioral Economics Can Improve Your Business by Kay-Yut Chen and Marina Krakovsky, to anyone serious about developing incentives for customers, vendors, suppliers, and customers that are backed by experimental research. Instead of relying on averages, guesswork, past experience, or standard thinking, this book builds the compelling case for utilizing lab research with real people. Before implementing a new incentive, the authors demonstrate that it's critical to understand how real people will act on those incentives.

Read the essential and thought provoking book Secrets of the Moneylab: How Behavioral Economics Can Improve Your Business by Kay-Yut Chen and Marina Krakovsky, and put the power of behavioral economics, lab experiments, and game theory to work for your organizations. The way that people behave in the real world, when money is involved, will surprise you. Understanding how humans act will give your company a powerful competitive edge.
